Biography

An early interest in Math and Science attracted Bernard Mont-Reynaud to Computer Science, a totally new and completely open field at the time, in spite of his strong interest in the visual arts. Short of pursuing an official art degree, he nurtured his love of art via self-education, taking art classes, and primarily by way of drawing, painting, collage, photography and abstract video.

During a 50+ year career as a computer scientist in Silicon Valley, he was involved in interesting research projects and applications too numerous to mention. However, some of his research involved image processing, which he notably applied to image pattern recognition and music analysis in the mid to late 80’s. This led to fascinating digital art experiments, involving a real-time interaction between a visual artist and specialized image processing algorithms. For details on this digital work, see Pastime and ImproVision.

In later years, while pursuing his career, he focused his art on oil painting. His 2014 exhibition called “From Impressionism to Abstract” consisted of over a dozen pieces emphasizing texture, movement, rhythm and color - be that vivid or nuanced palettes. Many of these pieces were actually non-representational.

Since retiring in 2023 from his high-tech career, he devotes himself fully to art, returning to acrylic painting and exploring other media such as wax monotype collage,  encaustic painting,  and a modest beginning with sculpture. He now thrives in Santa Fe’s art-rich environment and community, where he is ever deepening a joyful commitment to art.
